04 — Our story

Building Better People, Not Just Better Outcomes

The Swami Vivekananda Welfare Society started not with a plan, but with a question: how do we help people become their best selves? Inspired by Swami Vivekananda's belief that wisdom belongs to everyone, we've spent over a century building quiet, practical answers — in classrooms, communities, and hearts.

Education

Character-building education that shapes young minds with values, not just facts.

Community

Brotherhood that goes beyond words — cooperative drives built on genuine care.

Innovation

Rational inquiry and creative thinking that honour both science and wisdom.

Culture

A living heritage — rooted, but always growing toward the light.

Our Eternal Inspiration

You have to grow from the inside out. No one can teach you, no one can make you spiritual.

05 — Our history

Founded in Batticaloa, Built by Its People

The Swami Vivekananda Welfare Society (Reg. No: DS/MN/SS/VSO/R/65/2008) has served the Batticaloa and wider Eastern Province community of Sri Lanka since 1897. What began as a small circle of devotees committed to Swami Vivekananda's ideal of service before self has grown into a registered welfare society run today by local advisers, professionals, and volunteers — most of them based right here in Batticaloa.

Our Origin, Funding & Mission

Our Founding

The Batticaloa Vivekananda Welfare Society was established on March 17, 2009 by Swami Gnanamayanandaji Maharaj of the Ramakrishna Mission, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.

Initial Funding

Our initial funding was raised through contributions from Ramakrishna Mission devotees, well-wishers, and donors, as well as through funds personally collected by Swami Gnanamayananda Maharaj.

Our Objective

Our objective is to support the educational and spiritual awareness activities of underprivileged and destitute students living in remote areas of the Batticaloa District.

Social Service Initiatives

We have undertaken social service initiatives such as conducting medical camps for people living in extremely disadvantaged areas, as well as providing self-employment training and assistance to widows to help them start their own livelihoods.

06 — Core wisdom

Teachings That Drive Our Programs

Self-Belief & Strength

The history of the world is the history of a few men who had faith in themselves. That faith calls out the divinity within. You can do anything.

We focus on instilling absolute confidence and mental grit in children and youth to help them overcome self-doubt.

Scientific & Rational Spirit

It is better that mankind should become atheist by following reason than blindly believe in two hundred millions of gods on authority.

We encourage the spirit of scientific inquiry, logical questioning, and robust intellectual debate alongside ethical virtues.

Universal Harmony & Love

Relationships are more important than life, but it is important to have life in those relationships.

Fostering absolute social brotherhood, removing caste/creed divides, and celebrating collective human unity.

Manifestation of Perfection

Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man. Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man.

Our educational schemes seek to draw out inherent talents and character instead of just cramming facts.
